Well-known steel stockholder John
Parker & Son Ltd, based in Canterbury, are currently undergoing a
vehicle replacement programme. As well as other vehicles, Hawson Garner are converting a
large number of Volvo Chassis Cabs by manufacturing and fitting Dropside bodies. The bodies need to be extremely robust to cope with the heavy loads carried and include a host of customised options specifically designed for the customer. These include a multi-storage system to allow transportation of non-ferrous and steel sheets in separate compartments to avoid contact, as well as the ability to allow transportation of non-ferrous and steel sections, storage lockers and night working lights for overnight loading / unloading. The six wheel version has a removable rear gantry to enable the carriage of 12 meter steel beams in a flat condition.

As the photographs show, the Palm House at the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew is very impressive and when Kew decided they needed a replacement vehicle, they purchased the equally impressive Mercedes Sprinter and Hawson Garner Luton body. Mark Williamson at MercedesBenz Great West Road, who has been a long-standing customer of Hawson Garner, supplied the 312D Sprinter Chassis Cab. As the vehicle was to have a multi-purpose role the body specification included floor lashing rings, plywood lining, load lok and tie rails along with a 500kg tail lift. The vehicle has been put into service recently and is already proving to be extremely useful.
